Product of the Week – Glass Pendants from Curiousa & Curiousa

This week we are spoiling you with a whole collection of Glass Pendants from Curiousa & Curiousa. With endless ideas of colours, shapes and arrangements you’re going to be designing your room around these lights!

The Glass Pendants are available in 4 sizes, 5 shapes and 21 different colours. Each individual light is hand blown and includes fabric twisted flex and metal fittings. The variety of this collection means that everyone will have their personal favourite…or two! Each shade is traditionally free-blown without moulds, allowing virtually any shape, size and colour to be achieved. Curiousa shows how to mix and match different styles, we think that they’re perfect for not only a home but also a bar, restaurant or hotel.

Meet Esther Patterson, the founder of Curiousa & Curiousa designs hand-blown, bespoke glass and bone china lighting.

8“Glass is an amazing material. I love designing lights that show off the pure beauty of coloured glass, which for me has a magical quality with endless possibilities.”

Based in Derbyshire in the Midlands Esther is a proud British Designer using only UK based craftspeople and suppliers, she continues to work locally with carpenters, fabricators, photographers and glass blowers – all highly skilled crafts people.

Just 5 years ago Esther launched her range in Design Week at Tent London gaining the prestigious ‘Elle Decoration Approval’ award. With lights now retailing through Liberty’s London, designs used in Harvey Nicols Fifth Floor Cafe, pendants hanging in Jamie Oliver Restaurants, gaining a nomination for the British Design Awards for 2012 and 2013, then this year winning The Dulux Colour Award, Esther continues to go from strength to strength, developing new ranges and bespoke solutions for interior designers, architectural practices and private individuals.

What’s next for Curiousa & Curiousa?

Esther says, “The whole team are all so excited to be a part of the celebrations for Maison & Objet Paris’ 20th anniversary. Not only is this our first time exhibiting at Maison, but 2015 marks Curiousa’s 5th anniversary within the industry, so we just knew it would be the perfect exhibition to launch the year.”

Product of the Week – Bloom Light and Wooden Floor Stand from Tom Raffield

In a week of rain, hale and snow across the country we look forward to Spring with this flower inspired light from Tom Raffield. Our Product of the Week is the Bloom Light and Wooden Floor Stand.

This week the feature could have easily been called “Collection of the Week” as the Tom Raffield whole light collection are all each worthy of being our Product of the Week. To follow Tom we have also drawn our inspiration from nature and love the description of the Bloom Light being named after the opening of a flower.

Much like their Collection the Tom Raffield page connects with their visitors and beautifully describes each piece. “The Bloom Light utilises petals of bent wood arranged into a symmetrical shape around the central bulb. It has a sweep and flow that make it a statement piece. The large petals are made of high quality wood and mask much of the bulb, whilst also cutting through the light to create soft shadows and a warm glow.”

Once you have somehow narrowed down your favourite Light you then must choose your finish from the sustainably sourced ash, oak or walnut, or a combination of oak and walnut.

Offer – 15% Off

The team at Tom Raffield have kindly offered our readers 15% off their range with this code TRA15.

With nature running through his veins Tom grew up in Exmoor. Where better place to be inspired than when surrounded by extreme wilderness, tranquility and natural beauty. This is the environment that stimulated Tom’s imagination and inspired his motto for his work “Adventurous design and quality craftsmanship”.

We asked Tom to tell us his story from the beginning, “My fascination with the traditional practice of steam bending began whilst studying at Falmouth College of Arts. I discovered that the traditional technique of using a chamber wouldn’t allow him to create the complex 3D bends he had envisaged. Years of research and experimentation allowed me to develop a new steaming method to turn my design visions into reality.”

Tom was co-founder of the award-winning collective design company Sixixis, recognised for unique aesthetic, forward-thinking designs and now, through his own company, Tom continues to create spectacular, ecologically sound, innovative furniture and lighting.

Handcrafted in his studios in Cornwall, England, the range of contemporary lighting and furniture Tom now creates is based on beauty, integrity and a desire to create unique, high-specification products that will be cherished by their owners.

Eat Sleep Live could be described as Nottingham’s best kept secret and an exemplar of success in British manufacturing. Tucked away on a quiet industrial estate in a dedicated workshop, their 15 strong highly skilled and passionate team craft individual pieces of furniture from historic British reclaimed wood.

The company was formed in 2004, largely out of frustration, when designer and founder Mark Godsell-Fletcher was unable to find high quality wooden furniture to rival the mass-produced flat-pack alternative that was then readily available from any number of retailers.

So, Mark drew on the extensive skills and knowledge he had acquired over a career spanning industrial, architectural and interior design and made a dining table from solid British reclaimed wood.

Soon, friends and family were requesting tables and in realising there was great demand, Mark established Eat Sleep Live. He fondly remembers those early days with the single table design that he personally delivered throughout the length and breadth of the UK.

Join Eat Sleep Live and their team in celebrating their tenth anniversary! Why not arrange a viewing at their workshop to browse their collection of modern rustic furniture, all handmade in Great Britain from reclaimed wood.
